On the CIMA case
30 June 2016
Hotels and IT infrastructure support are the subjects for the August CIMA Operational and Management case studies.
Wise Choice Hotels is the operational 24-pager. You take the guise of a finance officer for a family business with four hotels. The FD, who you report to, is married to one of the owners.
We discover early on the brother and sister (the owners) used inheritance money to purchase the first hotel, and we are told all the hotels have separate booking systems with individual managers responsible for maintaining basic accounts.
Interestingly, the first hotel has a much better occupancy rate of 90%, 10% better than the other three hotels. The mix of business and leisure guests might become an issue here, although none of the hotels has a spa or gym.
The employers also pride themselves on their employment policy and the hotel doesnít employ zero-hour contracts.
Management students got lots of lovely pictures of data storage units in their case, all racked and stacked.
Candidates here take on the role of a financial manager reporting to the senior. Responsibilities include the management accounts and budget, and advising on pricing for special projects.
SparkSpace is a supplier of IT infrastructure support, primarily in the form of servers. Itís a value0added reseller.
R&D also looks set to play a part here, in the form of SparkInnovate.
