Funding cuts for over 25’s
04 January 2013
Many mature AATs are feeling the full force of new cuts in apprenticeship scheme funding.
The government was covering the cost of apprenticeship schemes for those irrespective of age.
Now, however, only those under 25 will receive funding. Those over 25 will have to organise their own loans! One 36 year-old explained that she was on a modest wage, paying high travel costs and a childminder. Her employer was also unwilling to pay for study so the apprenticeship scheme was a godsend. Now two thirds of the way through her course she feels she is being abandoned as she cannot afford to finish what she have started.
Other ‘students’ in similar situations have opted to study at home to reduce their costs, but feel the lack of classroom contact will affect their chances of passing the exams.
