Your fired!

26 November 2009

Dyslexic former KPMG trainee has won £45,435.06 at an employment tribunal.

The Big 4 firm sacked PQs Dhrupa Bid after she failed two ICAEW computer-based exams - which is KPMG’s current policy for all its PQs.
Bid seems to have been alert to her ‘problem’ as she had previously passed paper format exams with marks higher than 80%. These dropped to 40% when she sat them in front of a computer
It appears that after her first failure Bid had deferred sitting the retake so that a dyslexia assessment could be carried out by the ICAEW. The firm still warned her that she would be fired if she failed the next test!
Bid then duly re-sat the paper on a computer, only to fail again. She then discovered she should have been given an extension on time and been allowed to sit the exam ‘on paper’, as she did indeed have dyslexia!
The firm was ordered to pay £12,000 for injury to feelings, £8,529 for loss earnings and £24,906 for future losses. Interest was also added.
KPMG has claimed it believes it acted properly and fairly at all times.
